Update on the Senior Frozen Meals Program from Executive Director Jay Weatherford

Dear Friends and Partners,

This is the May 24th update of Wright County’s Care and Nutrition Support for seniors (60+).  We are starting our 10th week of response to COVID-19. Wright County Community Action (WCCA) has a support line for seniors; please encourage seniors to call (320) 963-6500 Ext. 274.  As a community, we want to help with our most vulnerable neighbors’ challenges, including isolation, assistance with grocery access through education, grocery delivery, senior mobile food shelf needs, frozen meal support, prescription access, and other needs as they present.

Active COVID-19 cases in Wright County have climbed from 84 to 152 this week.  Many of us now are hearing about situations in our community effecting people we know.  I have examples of three myself just this last week.  Also please find attached a PDF of a PowerPoint developed to describe the Wright County Team’s Senior Services Response to the COVID-19 Crisis.  I hope this will help inform partners with regard to the Wright County’s team work.

Wright County has over 24,000 individuals age 60+.  Of those 24,000 (60+) almost 1,600 (6.5%) live in poverty.  We are currently serving about 5% of this most vulnerable 60+ population, and we have found that COVID-19 does not discriminate on just economic lines.  Some of our neighbors experience a tremendous amount of fear, some have very high risk factors and experience extremely high medical costs, some struggle with access to grocery delivery, as well as some with the cost of food while on a fixed budget, especially as it has becomes less available and more expensive to obtain.

Since May 1st this team has delivered an average of 500 meals per day for a total of 8,490 meals (currently supplied through Catholic Charities and partially funded by Title III CMCOA).  These meals do not include Meal-On-Wheels, which are home delivered frozen meals also by Catholic Charities.

In the last weeks we have added over 40 new Senior Mobile Food Shelf Clients for county-wide delivery.

**NEW Frozen meal production started on Wednesday May 20th at Waverly Café and in the first 3 days almost 1,000 meals have been produced.   Thank you so much Waverly Café for taking on this important work to expand this resource for our seniors.

If you’d like to help expand this resource to our seniors expressly on Highway 12, please consider donating to the COVID-19 Fund at the Delano Loretto Area United Way:
  1. Write a check to:  Delano Loretto United Way
